The Department of English began its journey in 1975 as a general subject department, evolving into a full-fledged major department in 1991 with the launch of the BA English Language and Literature program. Demonstrating our commitment to advanced studies, we introduced the MA English Language and Literature in 2005. Our dedication to fostering research was officially recognized in 2012 when the department was granted the status of a Research Centre.
Our department includes two Professors, two Associate Professors, and seven Assistant Professors, whose collective expertise spans a broad spectrum of literary and linguistic disciplines, including Postcolonialism, Nationalism, Gender Studies, Film Studies, Linguistics, and Language Teaching. We're proud to currently host one research supervisor and six Ph.D. scholars, actively contributing to cutting-edge research.
The department provides various platforms for student development, such as academic seminars, insightful talks by subject experts, a dynamic film club, an engaging literary club, and a proactive research forum. Our students are not only academically proficient – with many having achieved University Topper status – but also actively involved in extracurricular activities, frequently participating in and organizing Youth Festivals, student elections, and sports events. Our accomplished alumnae have forged successful careers across a wide array of societal sectors.
